Consummate character actor James Rebhorn has died following a long bout with melanoma at 65. The actor was a constant presence on screen — though, like many actors of his ilk, many viewers probably never knew his name. His long filmography included hit films including Basic Instinct, Independence Day, Snow Falling on Cedars and Meet the Parents. It’s probably faster to name the TV shows he didn’t appear on than the ones he did, most recently in the role of Carrie Mathison’s father Frank on the excellent Showtime series Homeland.
