This morning’s The Take Away, has an interview with William Waybourn, the president of the Dallas Gay Alliance, which was closely connected with the AIDS/HIV buying club founded by Ron Wudruff and the subject matter of this year’s Oscar Nominee Dallas Buyers Club.  While Woodruff is  content to have more public attention focused on this social issue and the historical controversary that is the subject of the film, he raises concerns about Hollywood’s need to make a hero of Woodruff rather than recounting a factual version of the story line.

You can listen to the complete interview below.

Today, our subject is Dallas Buyers Club, which is nominated for SIX Oscars, including Best Picture.

The film tells the story of Ron Woodruff, a homophobic chauvinistic racist rodeo man in Dallas, Texas in the 1980s, who is diagnosed AIDS…and who…when denied treatment and services…begins smuggling medication into the US and selling it to people living with AIDS. All they have to do is pay a monthly membership fee, and they can receive all the drugs they want.

William Waybourn was the President of the Dallas Gay Alliance in the 1980s which served the gay community and people living with AIDS. Ron Woodruff was a volunteer there, and also received services through the center’s clinic.

William is here to tell us about that time, about Ron, and about his thoughts on the movie. All this week, as part of our “Real People/Best Picture” series we’re looking at some of the films that are nominated for Best Picture, and talking with people who are intimately connected with the stories behind those films.
