Joel Allen Schroder is the director and creator of Dear Mr. Watterson, a documentary about the life and work and legacy of Calvin and Hobbes cartoonist Bill Watterson. It’s a film that travels through not only the very real places Watterson drew from in his classic cartooning work but also through the cultural and commercial landscape of Newspapers at the end of the 20th Century. Topics discussed include Kickstarting your doc, the presence of absence, and some of the weirder places Calvin and Hobbes fandom led Schroder in his explorations. We spoke with Schroder at The Counter on Wilshire in the Miracle Mile district; you can find more information about the film’s theatrical run and VOD showings at www.dearmrwatterson.com.
