Child star and former U.S. ambassador Shirley Temple has died at the age of 85. Temple was among the first child stars of Hollywood, and her adorable, upbeat tone, cute singing voice, and impressive tap-dancing ability (for her age) was a welcome sight to Americans who were suffering through The Great Depression. THR notes that in her heyday, Temple was even more popular than Clark Gable, drew a salary of $1,250 a week at age 6, and she received a special Juvenile Academy Award “in grateful recognition of her outstanding contribution to screen entertainment during the year 1934.” As her popularity faded away as she grew older, Temple left acting and eventually became the U.S. delegate to the United Nations and “later served as the U.S. ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia and as the State Department’s chief of protocol.”
Our deepest condolences go out to Ms. Temple’s family and friends. After the jump you can watch some of Temple’s most memorable scenes.
