The Wind Rises, the final film from animation legend Hayao Miyazaki, doesn’t open in the U.S. until February 2014 (apart from the week-long Oscar-qualifying run it completed in New York and Los Angeles) but the first American trailer in now out, and it is as elegant and majestic and lovely as the master deserves.
The film was a box office sensation in Japan when it opened over the summer. Don’t expect that kind of response stateside, where busy, action-packed CGI movies dominate, but there are plenty of adults an animation fans eagerly waiting for this gentle drama, based on the true story of Japanese aviation piuoneer Jiro Horikoshi (the man who designed Japanese fighter planes during World War II).
This wordless preview should whet your appetite for “The Final Masterpiece” from Hayao Miyazaki.
